In short, you need to understand the 3 stages: deprivation, education, and motivation.

Having healthy diets to lose weight does not mean deprivation of meals. You can have carbohydrates in your diet, provided they are of the right kind, and still lose weight. Bad carbohydrate foods are those that have been refined and processed. These foods are not in their natural state. What are good carbohydrates? Good carbohydrates generally have a low glycemic index. Foods with a low glycemic index will not cause a spike in blood sugar. This is especially important for diabetics who have to constantly monitor their blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates are needed by the body for many functions, the most basic one would be to provide the body with energy. However, overeating carbohydrates results in fat storage. If your goal is to keep the weight off, this may be the better decision.

To create a healthy and effective diet plan, we need to educate ourselves. Long term weight management, including weight loss, is not about tracking calories, or low carbohydrates diets, it is about creating a lifestyle. Educate yourself on the whole, natural foods you can have in your diet. Although I support consumption of organic food highly, it is not necessary to eat organic to see benefits. You don’t have to make drastic changes immediately and start eating tofu and brown rice. Find the right natural foods that taste good to you, and then gradually remove less optimal foods over time.

Motivation is the final key to a healthy diet. I have personally experienced this in dieting. It is like a boulder rolling down a hill, momentum builds as you start seeing the results on the scale, more energy to start the day etc. Thus, a lifestyle will emerge, one that is continued and sustaining.
